Precision in Preparation: The Key to Long-Lasting Crowns

The part of a crown that decides its lifespan is the part nobody sees: the preparation of the tooth and the fit of the margin. What precision means at that scale.

The preparation

Enough tooth removed for the material’s strength and no more; a smooth, continuous margin at the right level relative to the gum; and a shape that lets the crown seat fully. Done under magnification.

The margin

Where the crown meets the tooth. Open by a fraction of a millimetre, it traps plaque and decays the tooth underneath. Closed, it lasts for years. Digital scanning and milling are what make a closed margin routine.

The bite

A crown that is fractionally high concentrates force and fractures. The fitting appointment ends with the bite measured and balanced, not assumed.
