The gums frame the smile
A smile depends on the gums as much as the teeth. When the gum line sits too low, is uneven from tooth to tooth, or shows a lot when you smile (a gummy smile), even healthy teeth can look short or out of proportion.
Who is it for?
A gummy smile, an uneven gum line that makes one tooth look shorter than its neighbour, preparing the gum frame before veneers, crowns or a smile makeover, and teeth that look short although they are healthy.
How is it done?
A consultation and smile analysis (photographs and, where needed, a 3D scan) to plan the new gum line tooth by tooth, then local anaesthesia; the reshaping is usually completed in one visit. The laser seals tissue as it works, so bleeding and swelling are minimal.
Recovery
Most patients return to their routine the same or next day. Mild tenderness for a few days is normal; a soft diet and gentle brushing around the area are advised until the gum settles. Cases caused by jaw or lip position need a different approach, explained honestly at the consultation.
Often combined with veneers
The gum line is designed first, then the veneers are proportioned to the final frame — the result depends on both together. Excess gum that has been removed does not grow back.
Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt? It is done under local anaesthesia, and with the laser most patients feel only mild tenderness for a few days.
Will the gum grow back? Removed excess gum does not return; if the cause is bone or lip position, a different treatment is recommended.
